Seaspan Joins The SMDG Community!

We are pleased to welcome Seaspan Corporation to the SMDG – Ship Message Design Group community! 🤝

As a global leader in vessel ownership and ship management, Seaspan supports many of the world’s major shipping lines through a modern, efficient fleet. Their strong focus on operational excellence, safety, and sustainability makes them a natural fit for SMDG’s mission to advance digital standardization across maritime and logistics networks.

Seaspan will contribute their expertise to our Vessel Profile Standards working group, bringing deep, practical knowledge of vessel specifications, fleet optimization, and technical ship management. Their operational perspective will help ensure our standards reflect real-world vessel operations and ownership structures.

The working group has already achieved significant progress in Q1, developing comprehensive data models to enable more accurate, efficient information exchange across the industry. Seaspan’s involvement comes at a pivotal moment as we transition from framework development toward practical implementation and broader adoption.

Ann-Christin Fröhmcke, Co-Chair of SMDG:
“We are very pleased to welcome Seaspan Corporation to SMDG. Their operational perspective and close collaboration with industry partners will bring valuable insight to our discussions as we continue advancing practical digital standards for the shipping industry.”

Attributes code for plastic pellets “PLA” changes to “PLX”

Attributes code for plastic pellets “PLA” changes to “PLX”

The attribute code “PLA” has been changed to “PLX”.
This change is intended to avoid confusion with the abbreviation for a specific type of plastic pellets—polylactic acid, a subcategory of biodegradable plastic pellets—commonly used in public communications.
The update has been agreed upon between SMDG and the WSC.

New Release: SMDG–UN/CEFACT Transshipment White Paper

New Release: SMDG–UN/CEFACT Transshipment White Paper

We are pleased to announce the release of the SMDG–UN/CEFACT White Paper on Transshipment, developed through a joint collaborative effort between the SMDG Transshipment Working Group and the UN/CEFACT community.

The paper introduces a new approach to ocean freight journey tracking, centered around the Unique Connection ID (UCID) — an identifier for connections between terminals. This concept shifts the focus from tracking vessels to tracking the journey itself, helping to improve efficiency, transparency, and data exchange in global trade.

This important milestone is the result of close collaboration between Dr. Hanane Becha, Sönke Witt, Alex Hartnoll, Thor Baunsgaard, and Michael Schroeder, with contributions from the wider SMDG and UN/CEFACT communities.

We invite all industry stakeholders to learn more about this proposal and its potential to support more efficient and data-driven global logistics.
